Study Examines Pet Training Pad Materials and Uses

August 22, 2026

Pet training pads serve as essential tools for pet care, with their core materials directly influencing absorbency, breathability, leak-proof performance, and skin-friendliness for pets. Market-available training pads primarily consist of three key components: non-woven fabric, fluff pulp (also called absorbent paper pulp), and polyethylene (PE) film. The synergy of these materials ensures optimal functionality.

Non-Woven Fabric Layer

Typically positioned as the top layer, non-woven fabric provides a soft, comfortable surface while facilitating rapid liquid penetration to keep pets' paws dry. Its fiber structure determines breathability, helping minimize odors and maintain a dry environment. Different manufacturing techniques (such as spunbond or thermal-bonded non-woven) affect tensile strength, softness, and liquid permeability.

Fluff Pulp Layer

This forms the absorbent core of training pads. Specially treated fluff pulp demonstrates exceptional moisture absorption and retention capabilities, quickly locking in liquids to prevent backflow. The quality and density of fluff pulp directly determine a pad's single-use capacity and overall absorption efficiency. Modern pads often combine fluff pulp with superabsorbent polymers (SAP) to enhance both absorption speed and liquid retention under pressure.

Polyethylene (PE) Film Layer

As the waterproof base layer, PE film creates an effective barrier against leaks, protecting floors and furniture. Manufacturers must precisely calibrate film thickness and density—ensuring waterproof performance without compromising breathability. Premium training pads may incorporate breathable PE membranes that permit minimal gas exchange while maintaining leak protection.

The careful balance of these materials, combined with precision engineering, produces high-performance pet training pads. When selecting products, pet owners should evaluate these material characteristics to choose options best suited to their pets' needs—facilitating effective toilet training while preserving home cleanliness and comfort.
