Conveyor Pulley Lagging: Types, Benefits & How to Choose the Right One

May 29, 2026

What Is Pulley Lagging?

Pulley lagging is a protective covering applied to conveyor pulleys to increase friction between the pulley and belt, protect the pulley shell from wear, and improve belt tracking. Proper lagging can increase conveyor system efficiency by up to 15% and significantly extend pulley service life.

Types of Pulley Lagging

1. Rubber Lagging

The most common type, rubber lagging offers excellent grip and is available in plain, diamond, and grooved patterns. Diamond pattern is particularly effective in wet conditions as it channels water away from the pulley-belt interface.

2. Ceramic Lagging

Embedded ceramic tiles provide the highest friction coefficient under all conditions — wet, dry, or muddy. Ideal for high-tension drive pulleys in mining and heavy industrial applications. Service life is 3-5x longer than rubber lagging.

3. Polyurethane Lagging

Offers excellent wear resistance and is preferred in food processing and pharmaceutical applications where rubber contamination must be avoided. Available with FDA-compliant formulations.

Key Benefits

  • Increased friction: Reduces belt slippage and improves power transmission efficiency
  • Pulley protection: Shields the steel shell from abrasive wear and corrosion
  • Better tracking: Crowned or grooved lagging helps center the belt automatically
  • Extended belt life: Reduced slippage means less belt cover wear

Selection Guide

For drive pulleys, prioritize high-friction lagging (diamond rubber or ceramic) to maximize torque transfer. For non-drive pulleys, plain rubber lagging provides adequate protection at lower cost. In wet or muddy environments, specify diamond-grooved rubber or ceramic lagging to maintain grip.

MWIN manufactures a full range of rubber pulley lagging in standard and custom sizes, with options for hot vulcanization or cold bond installation. Contact us with your pulley dimensions for a quote.
